Dozens of families came by to pick up bulk groceries to sustain them over the winter break. It’s the first time Miami-Dade County Public Schools distributed meals over winter. “Food insecurity continues to be a sad reality in our community,” said Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho. “We recognize during this pandemic many families are struggling.” 139 schools distributed 1.2 million meals, enough for 12 breakfasts and 12 lunches for 40,000 students in need. Prepared by chef José Andrés, the school district will deliver 500 hot meals a day for nine days over the break to where the neediest students reside.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools are making sure that students don t go hungry over the upcoming Winter Break, as students will be off for two weeks starting next Monday December 21st. Over 40,000 students are in need this holiday season, and M-DCPS has made plans to distribute approximately one million meals to families to ensure that students have food security over the two-week Winter Recess. Arrangements have been made at select schools, based on the number of students within the school who receive free/reduced-price meal benefits. Some families will be receiving items that equate to 12 breakfast and 12 lunch meals per student, according to USDA requirements.
