The April 13 Coral Gables municipal election will occur without the knowledge or participation of what candidates say is an important voting demographic University of Miami students.
Although UM students live, recreate and often have jobs in Coral Gables, voting statistics show that most are unlikely to leave their dorms and off-campus apartments to vote in Tuesday’s election, which will put a new mayor in office for the next two years and two new commissioners in office for the next four.

The mayor s dad, Xavier Suarez, was elected the City of Miami s first Cuban-born mayor, serving from 1985 to 1993 and again, briefly, in the late 1990s, before he was unseated in a voter-fraud scandal. The paterfamilias was later elected to two terms as Miami-Dade commissioner, serving from 2011 until this past November.

Alumnus Michael Hernandez 04, MPA 11 has had an extensive career in public affairs.
He worked both Obama campaigns in 2008 and 2012 and served as the director of communications and senior advisor for Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Giménez for four years. He’s currently a senior vice president at Mercury Florida, an international powerhouse public affairs consulting firm and serves as president for the FIU Alumni Association Board of Directors, while also teaching effective governmental Communication at the Green School.
Hernandez s latest endeavor landed him on the small screen, being the on-air political analyst for WSCV Telemundo 51.
