Show Transcript As of today, One victim passed away in the hospital and we ve recovered eight more victims on site. So I am confirming today that the death toll is at nine. We re cutting a deep trench to assist us. It s now 125 ft in length into the pile. It s 20 ft wide and 40 ft deep. Now, this trench is very critical to the continuation of the search and rescue process. Uh, we ve continued all night to build that trench, and as a result of that, we were able to recover for additional bodies in the rubble, as well as additional human remains. Nine people are now confirmed dead from the Surfside, Fla. condominium collapse, officials announced Sunday. Additional human remains have also been found.
A Miami rabbi who is providing spiritual support to grieving families near the Surfside, Fl., disaster site estimated that at least 50 Jewish people and perhaps many more are missing after Thursday’s collapse of the condominium tower.
Rabbi Julie Jacobs leads Beth David Congregation, an unaffiliated synagogue in Miami where Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is a member. Jacobs is part of a rotation of rabbis representing the spectrum of Jewish practice – who are available 24/7 at the center officials have set up for relatives of the 156 people who remain missing.
Jacobs said she is heartened by how the Jewish response to the crisis has brought clergy and other volunteers together across denominations.
“She was so worried before the big trip, but I told her that it would be a great experience and an opportunity to achieve everything she wanted,” a friend said. “Right now, I wish I hadn’t.”
