(CNN) The death toll from the Surfside, Florida, condo tower collapse rose to 86 on Saturday as recovery efforts were briefly halted after a lighting strike, officials said.
Search teams have been recovering victims more quickly now that a portion of the tower that remained standing was demolished and is no longer a threat to collapse, according to Florida Fire Marshall and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis.
On Monday, a day after the demolition of the standing portion of Champlain Towers South, the death toll stood at 28. The building partially collapsed on June 24.

Death toll reaches 86 in Florida collapse; site to be cleared ‘sooner than expected’
MIAMI First responders continuing the search and recovery mission in the debris of the collapsed Surfside condo tower on Saturday worked at times through heavy downpours and strong wind gusts to uncover more of the former residents and visitors of the Champlain Towers South, with perhaps dozens of victims yet to be found.
The recovery effort – which overnight pulled seven more bodies from the rubble – briefly paused at 7 a.m. after a lightning strike. But the grueling, gut-wrenching task went on amid intense heat, and police-escorted trucks carrying debris from the site were seen on the Julia Tuttle Causeway and the Florida Turnpike.

(CNN) Binx, a cat who lived on the ninth floor of the Champlain Towers South, was reunited with his family on Friday after volunteers found him near the site of the collapse, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said in a news conference.
“After 16 long and extremely difficult days, I’m happy to be able to share a small piece of good news,” the mayor said Friday evening.
Levine Cava said there are people who feed the cats in the area surrounding the collapse site and one of the volunteers thought they recognized the cat and brought it to an animal shelter, “where it was positively identified” as belonging to one of the families in the building.
