Another three bodies were found on Monday as search resumed after the demolition of remainder of the condominium which partially collapsed 12 days ago in Surfside, southeastern U.S. state Florida, increasing the death toll to 27.
As many as 118 people still unaccounted for, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a news briefing.
Search efforts resumed around midnight after the demolition around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday in a process that uses small, strategically placed explosives and relies on gravity to bring the building down in place, the mayor said. Bringing the building down in a controlled manner was critical to expanding our scope of search, Levine Cava said. Truly, we could not continue without bringing this building down.

The demolition of the remaining section of a condo building in South Florida has helped speed up search-and-rescue efforts.
While the confirmed death toll in the June 24 collapse of the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside, Florida, rose to 28 on Monday, officials expressed optimism now that the planned demolition was finished.
Tropical Storm Elsa was approaching but did not appear to be headed toward the region.
The search-and-rescue efforts restarted on Monday, 20 minutes after the demolition, emergency management officials said.

Tropical storm Elsa brought drenching rain and strong winds to Cuba Monday but left the island without major damage, as the US National Hurricane Center reported the storm was now making its way toward the Florida Keys.
Elsa has left a trail of destruction through the Caribbean, claiming at least three lives, and is expected to gain strength as it emerges off the coast of western Cuba Monday evening.
Over 100,000 people were evacuated from coastal or low-lying areas as the storm cut through the island, with Cuba s meteorological institute Insmet reporting winds of up to 100 kilometers an hour.

SURFSIDE, Fla. (Reuters) – Even as the death toll from a collapsed Miami-area condominium rose to 28, officials on Monday expressed renewed hope of finding survivors now that the building’s demolition is complete and Tropical Storm Elsa is veering away.
Search-and-rescue efforts resumed on Monday, just 20 minutes after the demolition of the remains of the 12-story Champlain Towers South complex in Surfside that partially collapsed overnight on June 24, emergency management officials said.
The recovery of three more bodies on Monday brought the number of confirmed dead to 27, with 118 people still missing, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said.
