A group of homeless people living under a railroad bridge in Hialeah apparently set their encampment on fire during a standoff with authorities in recent weeks after a clean-up crew was dispatched to clear out the site.
In a geographic conundrum, the encampment at West 12th Avenue and Okeechobee Road bordered Miami Springs, Medley, Hialeah, and unincorporated Miami-Dade County, but it sat on property where Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway police have jurisdiction. Located near a string of low-budget motels, the campsite was home to upward of two dozen people.

Republican governors across the US are beginning to slash unemployment benefits, despite the economic damage of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The GOP leaders are aiming at the supplementary $300 weekly benefits authorized by the Federal Government since last year. On Friday, Arkansas joined Montana and South Carolina in the reductions. Indiana and Arizona have signalled they will follow.
Some states have tightened eligibility requirements. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey signed a measure requiring any recipient to show he/she is seeking a job. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he will approve a similar restriction.
