A Behind The Scenes Look Into Enanta s CEO Jay Luly

A Behind The Scenes Look Into Enanta s CEO, Jay Luly Source: Life Science Leader Follow Me On Twitter @RfwrightLSL Jay Luly, Ph.D., president and CEO, Enanta Pharmaceuticals “I grew up in Illinois,” shares Jay Luly, Ph.D., CEO of Enanta Pharmaceuticals. Luly is being interviewed for a future feature in Life Science Leader, and I started the conversation with a little ice breaker. Luly shares that somewhere along the way in high school, he figured out he wanted to study chemistry. Turns out the University of Illinois (U of I) had one of the strongest chemistry departments in the country at that point. “So many kids go on college trips, and it blows me away with how many schools they might visit today,” he states. But for him, U of I was very obvious, as it was a great school, proximal, and affordable. Upon completion of his undergrad, Luly moved to the West Coast to pursue a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. “That was my first foray to the Bay area.”

Pandemic Brings an Unexpected Twist to Alum s Protein Discovery

I In the now ubiquitous computer-generated image of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that has ricocheted around the world in the year since it was created at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is the virus’s “spike” proteins that catch the eye. Rendered in lurid red-orange, the spikes bristle like a dense forest on the barren, gray surface of a distant planet, in both color and form embodying the dread and sorrow that COVID has unleashed upon humanity. But the spikes of SARS-CoV-2 would be no more than a biological curiosity were it not for a less-familiar protein called ACE2, which provides the portal through which the virus enters our cells to hijack them for its own ends.
