Last week Australia marked a milestone in its push to protect our Pacific island neighbours from COVID-19, with vaccine donations passing the 1 million mark. But the achievement came by a peculiar route: with many Australians either reluctant to take up the AstraZeneca vaccine or advised against it, supplies had been ″freed up″ (to use Minister for the Pacific Zed Seselja’s phrase) for countries in need such as Fiji, East Timor and the Solomon Islands.
It showed once again that even Australians’ decision not to do something can have profound consequences for people whom Prime Minister Scott Morrison has described as “family”. But as our international editor Peter Hartcher has pointed out, our island neighbours only seem to warrant our close attention in a crisis like this pandemic.
