The Return of Sculpture Milwaukee

Photo by Jeramey Jannene. Sculpture Milwaukee, the free public art exhibit, will return for its fifth season, but with a new twist. The seasonal exhibit, which lines Wisconsin Avenue through Downtown and now Broadway in the Historic Third Ward, will be installed starting later this month. Guest curators have been hired, Chicago-based artist Michelle Grabner. Gates was described as “one of the world’s most influential living artists,” by London art gallery Tate Modern. Grabner is a recipient of a 2021 Guggenheim fellowship and an art professor at the Art Institute of Chicago. She has previously helped curate the annual program. Her piece “Untitled (2017),” featured in the 2017 exhibit, is now permanently installed along the riverwalk in the Histor

Sara Cwynar and Lucy Gallun on Glass Life

Sara Cwynar and curator Glass Life (Aperture, 2021). A feminist-inflected investigation of color and image-driven consumer culture,  Glass Life brings together Cwynar’s multilayered portraits and stills from the films  Soft Film (2016),  Rose Gold (2017), and  Red Film (2018). Gallun and Cwynar will discuss the artist’s multilayered practice and how she pursues photography in relation to film, sculpture, digital culture, and the cultural and technological history of image-making. This event takes place in conjunction with the June installment of the Museum of Modern Art’s Hyundai Card Video Views, featuring a film by Sara Cwynar. More information and access to the screening will be available on June 9, 2021.

Sculpture Milwaukee 2021 begins installing outdoor artworks in May Sculpture Milwaukee will begin installation of its fifth season of outdoor public art this month, adding new works to 15 holdovers from the 2020 exhibit along Wisconsin Avenue and in the Historic Third Ward. Guest curators Theaster Gates and Michelle Grabner are introducing a titled exhibit for the first time in this project, there is this We, drawn from a poem by Gwendolyn Brooks. In a statement from Sculpture Milwaukee, Grabner said the title reflects works that honor belief in social change through the provocations of the artistic imagination.   Planned new sculptures include: A work by Betty Gold to be installed permanently on the Milwaukee Art Museum campus.

PALM BEACH, FLA .-Pace Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition of work by Tara Donovan which reexamines the artist’s seminal Composition (Cards) series at the gallery’s outpost in Palm Beach. Ethereal, illusive pieces made from styrene index cards, the five sculptural paintings on view exemplify Donovan’s unique approach to artmaking, a generative process in which she incrementally and cumulatively shapes her work. Collectively, Donovan’s practice is characterized by her ongoing exploration of the aesthetic potential of her chosen media as well as her formidable capacity to challenge and play with the limits of perception. Durkin, Jr., 71, died after a six-year battle with cancer on April 18. As the leader of Durkin Associates, he worked as an advisor with over 100 clients to help raise money for local philanthropic projects, but was known for having the passion “of a volunteer” when he worked on fundraising efforts   including the creation of MKE Urban Stables, the unique home for the Milwaukee Police Department‘s mounted horse patrol and equine-assisted therapy program.
