Jazz drummer Sam Belton pines for the old days in Milwaukee.
He remembers Saturday nights in the 1960s when he and his friends would get dressed up and walk up and down a bustling Walnut Street and listen as jazz poured out of clubs that lined the street.
Those days are long gone, but Belton is hoping to bring a slice back to the neighborhoods north of downtown.
He has opened Sam s Place Jazz Cafe at 3338 N. King Drive, where he is serving coffee from his own coffee line, a full menu, and live jazz.
In 2019, Belton won a bid from Bader Philanthropies, which built the space and surveyed neighbors to see what they wanted to occupy the building. One of the top responses was to have a restaurant or a café.

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley on Wednesday, Feb. 24 delivered his 2021 State of the County address.
