Our County Parks are in Trouble Morgan Park Milwaukee County Parks are on life support. We are six years away from the parks receiving no taxpayer support. County Executive David Crowley predicts that in 2027, every dollar of current revenue will need to be dedicated to services mandated by the State of Wisconsin. In 1989, 23% of the county’s tax levy went to our parks. By 2019 that number had dropped to 5%. Without new revenue sources, there will be nothing left over for our parks. Milwaukee County Parks are defined by the State of Wisconsin as a “non-mandated service.” State government mandates that Milwaukee County provide a variety of services to support courts, the jail and certain social services. Parks and other cultural amenities are not included.

There will be no lifeguards on Bradford Beach this summer, and only four public pools will be open due to a lifeguard shortage in the Milwaukee County Parks system. The county parks system has struggled with declining numbers of lifeguard recruits in recent years. In fact, the shortage of lifeguards is a problem occurring all over the country. In May, the parks department reported it had only 52 guards for the entire parks system heading into the 2021 swim season. In 2019, the county had 135 guards.

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Brewfest will return to the city s lakefront at McKinley Park on Saturday, July 31. The 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19. The celebration will take place from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with 2 p.m. admission for VIP ticket holders. General admission is $65 in advance, $75 at the gate. VIP tickets are $85 in advance, $95 at the gate.

Traditional City 4th of July Celebrations Continue in 2021

  City of Milwaukee Fourth of July festivities are resuming because the health order restrictions have been lifted. Activities, including parades, picnics, and fireworks that were scheduled to take place in parks around the city, are scheduled for Monday, July 5th. The Milwaukee July 5th daytime celebrations will take place at Humboldt Park, King Center and Enderis Playfield where volunteers carry on a tradition started in 1911. Fireworks will be held in ten Milwaukee County Parks including Alcott, Gordon, Humboldt, Jackson, Lake, Lincoln, Mitchell, Noyes, Washington, and Wilson. Most of the neighborhood activities and fireworks take place in Milwaukee County Parks, and county officials are important partners in hosting the city celebrations.
