Whilst Brexit has created major societal upheaval, it has illuminated issues that were brewing far in advance of its arrival. This is especially true in the agriculture sector. Brexit was presented as an opportunity to revise certain agricultural policies that facilitate ecological breakdown, but it has also provoked a critical examination of neoconservative policies and their relationship with ecological discourses and practice. Seeming to recognise the ecological impacts of the EU Common Agriculture Policy (CAP), the UK government has shifted away from the subsidy scheme which rewarded farmers largely based on land size. The EU system has been critiqued for disadvantaging smaller-scale farmers, and for encouraging a harmful extractivist approach to EU food production which has degraded the rural landscapes the British countryside. Farm leaders are encouraging consumers to ignore calls to adopt a vegan lifestyle during the month of January.
The not-for-profit Veganuary organisation claims its annual initiative encouraging people to give up meat and other animal products is increasingly popular.
Balanced diet
Some 125,000 UK consumers are said to have signed up to Veganuary, and some of Britain’s biggest retailers and fast food chains have launched their own vegan products.
Vegan activists claim eating meat is bad for human health and contributes to climate change.
But farm leaders say red meat remains important for a balanced diet – and argue that British dairy and livestock production is among the most sustainable in the world.
“I’ve going to brave it and colour my own hair,” states Stacey Dooley at the start of her ad for Nice’n Easy, with whom she signed a two-year deal this year. The big reveal soon follows with Dooley emerging from the bathroom, looking faultless (and surely not achieved without a team of professional stylists). Dooley is relatable enough, and the fact a recent fringe cut was worthy of coverage in all the major celeb gossip sites suggests she was a savvy choice of ambassador for the brand.
