Oh, did I mention it also pays $500,000? Well, sorta.
It’s called the Mask Innovation Challenge: Building Tomorrow’s Mask, and is looking for designers and engineers to create a face mask that fits better, is more comfortable, and is more effective at filtering out air particles.
You don’t have a super long time to develop this new technology as the application period is open now and only stays open until April 21st. WOODTV says they’ll choose 10 winners in the first phase and those 10 will also be given $10k. Then phase two will award up to 5 winners who will split $400,000.
Could you come up with something? on April 6, 2021, 8:05 11 comments
In brief: Mask wearing has become a familiar sight across the world, but many people dislike wearing them for a variety of design-related reasons. If you think you can come up with something better, the US government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) is willing to pay up to $500,000 for your ideas.
The Mask Innovation Challenge aims to find designs that address some of the issues discouraging people from wearing masks. Anyone who uses glasses, for example, will know the frustration of walking around blind as their lenses fog up. There’s also the skin irritation that some wearers experience, the actual discomfort masks cause, and the nightmare of trying to communicate with someone who can neither hear you properly nor see your mouth. Additionally, some masks tout levels of protection without any scientific evidence backing up these claims.

Tired of using masks that fog up your glasses, irritate skin? Now you can design “the next generation of masks” that is low on cost, comfortable to wear and safe against Covid-19 pathogens, and also win $500,000.
The competition Mask Innovation Challenge has been announced by the US government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) in partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). It is open only for participants from the US.
While public health agencies worldwide are encouraging people to wear masks to curb the spread of infectious Covid-19, prolonged wearing increases issues such as skin allergy, physical discomfort and difficulty in communicating.
