CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) â One Navy service member was killed and five other service members were injured in a chain-reaction collision on Interstate 5 early Tuesday near Camp Pendleton.
Just before 7 a.m., five military trucks were traveling in a convoy on southbound I-5, just south of Basilone Road, when for unknown reasons, the convoy began to slow. The slowdown caused a chain-reaction crash.

The crash happened south of Basilone Road about 6:50 a.m. local time when the convoy of five trucks began slowing down for unknown reasons, CHP Officer Juan Escobar said. “One of the truck trailers was pushed forward into the cab, causing fatal injuries to the driver,” who died at the scene, Escobar said in a statement.
The sailors, members of Ventura County-based Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5, were headed south on Interstate 5 in San Onofre shortly before 7 a.m.
