MLB Commissioner Manfred and Double Standards

Four years before taking Major League Baseball s All-Star Game away from Atlanta to protest Georgia s new election law, Commissioner Rob Manfred pandered to woke activists by overreacting to one situation while underreacting to a far worse one. Manfred suspended a player who childishly mocked an opponent s ancestry yet ignored another who pulled a gun on a woman, leading to his arrest for felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Five weeks before his arrest, that player became the major league s first to kneel during the national anthem as a protest. This tale of double standards begins Oct. 27, 2017. In the third game of the World Series, the Houston Astros Yulieski Gurriel hit a home run off the Los Angeles Dodgers Yu Darvish, a native of Japan. After Gurriel returned to the dugout, cameras caught him manipulating his eyes to imitate Asian facial features and describing the pitcher as a chinito, Spanish for Chinese boy.

MLB All-Star Game yanked from Georgia over voting law

MLB All-Star Game yanked from Georgia over voting law By RONALD BLUMApril 3, 2021 GMT NEW YORK (AP) Atlanta lost Major League Baseball’s summer All-Star Game on Friday over the league’s objections to sweeping changes to Georgia voting laws that critics including the CEOs of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines and Coca-Cola have condemned as being too restrictive. The decision to pull the July 13 game from Atlanta’s Truist Park amounts to the first economic backlash against Georgia for the voting law that Republican Gov. Brian Kemp quickly signed into law March 25. Kemp has insisted the law’s critics have mischaracterized what it does, yet GOP lawmakers adopted the changes largely in response to false claims of fraud in the 2020 elections by former President Donald Trump and his supporters. The law includes new restrictions on voting by mail and greater legislative control over how elections are run.

Remembering Fernandomania, 40 Years Later | FanGraphs Baseball

April 9, 2021 The mystery pitcher began appearing in my morning box scores during the second half of September 1980. Sometimes he was Valenzuela, others Valenzla, but every time I looked, he had zeroes next to his name. I couldn’t find him in my baseball card set, my Street & Smith’s Official Yearbook 1980, or my Complete Handbook of Baseball 1980. All I knew was that suddenly he was one of the Dodgers’ most reliable relievers, a rookie thrown into the fire of a three-way NL West race between the Dodgers, Astros, and Reds. What I didn’t know was that just over six months later, everybody who was anybody would know the name Fernando Valenzuela and the trail of zeroes he left in his wake. Fernandomania was coming.
