In less than a month, President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn into office and immediately confront a list of cybersecurity problems ranging from a now-leaderless Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to the SolarWinds breach, which affected large portions of the federal government and private industry. Before the election, Biden spoke generally about how his approach to foreign policy, such as rebuilding alliances with European allies, and how a more direct approach to Russia would shape not only national security in his administration but cybersecurity, as well (see: On Monday, post-SolarWinds, Biden took a much more direct approach to cybersecurity, noting that the U.S. risks falling behind countries such as China and Russia.

SolarWinds Orion: Fixes Aim to Block Sunburst and Supernova

Kevin Thompson, president and CEO of SolarWinds, in a video message to customers about the attack Security software vendor SolarWinds has updated multiple versions of its Orion network monitoring platform to remove the Sunburst backdoor that was added to its code as part of a massive supply chain attack. The updates also block Supernova malware that attackers installed by exploiting a flaw in Orion. But incident response experts have warned that full cleanup may take years. SolarWinds asks all Orion platform customers to update their Orion platform software as soon as possible to help ensure the security of your environment, the company said in a recently issued security advisory.

Finnish Officials Investigate Hack of Lawmakers Email

Finland s parliament building in Helsinki (Photo: Wikipedia) Finnish police and parliament officials are investigating a security incident that happened earlier this year in which attackers gained access to internal IT networks and appear to have compromised lawmakers email accounts. The strike appears to have taken place sometime during the fall and was discovered earlier this month, according to the Finnish Central Criminal Police. Currently, law enforcement officials believe this intrusion is an act of espionage. The act is not accidental. At this stage, one alternative is that unknown [actors] have been able to obtain information through the hacking, either for the benefit of a foreign state or to harm Finland, says Tero Muurman, the crime commissioner from the Finnish Central Criminal Police.
