Meet the RCCTO Engineers delivering rapid prototypes to drive Army modernization

The Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office is delivering numerous Army “firsts” – including the prototype long range hypersonic weapon, combat-capable lasers, and a ground-launched mid-range fires capability using Navy missiles. But being first also means not being perfect – which for an engineer, can mean a whole new way of thinking. The RCCTO capabilities aren’t aiming to be the enduring Army solutions, but instead experimental prototypes with residual combat capability – something that bridges the “valley of death” between science and technology and programs of record. They give Soldiers a system they can use on the battlefield and give the Army important information to shape future decisions.

US Navy Image The Government Accountability Office released a new report that warns Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarine cost and schedule plans are at risk due to problems with a new digital design tool and cascading effects stemming from the design challenges. The report – Columbia Class Submarine: Delivery Hinges on Timely and Quality Materials from an Atrophied Supplier Base – explains that Columbia program prime contractor “Electric Boat faces persistent problems with its design tool leading to cost increases and schedule delays during the design phase. Late completion of design products threatens to impede construction progress and indicates challenges in the Columbia class program’s abil

Lockheed Martin delivers HELIOS laser system to US Navy

Lockheed Martin delivers HELIOS laser system to US Navy 14 Jan 2021 US Navy has recently demonstrated above 60kW output power based on multiple kilowatt fiber lasers. Artist’s rendering of Lockheed Martin’s HELIOS system. This year, the U.S. Navy is scheduled to field the first acquisition program to deploy the High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance, or HELIOS – a laser weapon system with high-energy fiber lasers intended for permanent fielding by the U.S. Department of Defense. This will be the only deployed laser system integrated into an operational Flight IIA DDG (destroyer, guided missile). This follows Lockheed Martin and the US Navy’s recent demonstration of full laser power in excess of the 60 kW requirement.

Blue Canyon Technologies Completes Satellite Bus CDR for DARPA Blackjack Program

Photo: DARPA Blue Canyon Technologies (BCT) has completed its Critical Design Review (CDR) validating its X-SAT Saturn-class bus design to support the Blackjack Program, the company announced Dec. 14. Blackjack is a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program to leverage commercial Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) technology for a global high-speed network for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).  In the CDR, which took place over a two-day period at its satellite constellation factory in Lafayette, Colorado, BCT demonstrated its X-SAT Saturn-class bus design, validating the design and capabilities of the system in support of the Blackjack program. The Saturn bus is the largest microsatellite bus that BCT offers.
