John Kerry’s short visit to leave long-term effects

John Kerry, the special presidential envoy for climate of the United States, is coming to Dhaka tomorrow. Though his visit will be of short duration, it has long and important implications for Bangladesh s effort to address the climate vulnerabilities and seek support for sustainable solutions at global levels.
Bangladesh is planning to adapt to the adverse impacts of human-induced climate change and aiming to become a resilient country by 2030, as both the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change goals are supposed to be achieved by that year.
At the same time, we are looking forward to graduating out of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) status in the next few years and need to also plan this transition carefully. One important dimension of transitioning from being an LDC to becoming a developing country is for knowledge generation and capacity-building to be carried out by our own citizens, rather than depending on international consultants to provide us with technical assistance.
Momen virtually meets his Finnish counterpart; calls for more investment

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has said Bangladesh and Finland should observe the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2022 in a befitting manner through high-level political visits, investment dialogues and cultural exchanges.
Momen said this during his virtual meeting with his Finnish counterpart Pekka Haavisto on Tuesday.
During their hour-long meeting, the two Ministers recalled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s meeting with the President Sauli Niniistö of Finland in Helsinki in June 2019.
The two Ministers stressed the importance of regular exchange of high-level visits and diplomatic consultations.
