1871 –City of Birmingham founded; now the state’s most populous city, Birmingham was founded at the crossing of two rail lines near one of the world’s richest deposits of minerals.
1873 Birmingham becomes seat of Jefferson County.
–First Colored Baptist Church founded. Birmingham particularly hard hit by cholera due to the lack of urban infrastructure and the poor housing conditions. At least 128 people died from cholera, which struck in the height of summer and persisted for several weeks. The outbreak caused about half of Birmingham’s 4,000 residents to flee.
1874 – Birmingham Iron Age newspaper in publication.

Chris Hettich’s business is the kind you never think about, at least until you really, really need it.
Throughout the Regions Tradition, the annual Birmingham major on the PGA Tour Champions schedule, a lot of people are very happy Hettich is involved.
“We’ve had up to 150 units out here at one time, especially for peak attendance,” Hettich said before this year’s tournament. But 2021, the first in a global pandemic, was different. “We’ll have fewer individual portables and, instead of six or seven restroom trailers, we’ll have three.”

Rinus VeeKay makes it five different winners in five races races this season for NTT IndyCar Series.

Rinus VeeKay led 33 of 85 laps on Saturday to become the NTT IndyCar Series fifth different winner in five races this season.
Romain Grosjean, who failed to reach the podium in his last five years in Formula 1, finished second.
VeeKay is third first-time IndyCar winner this season, joining Pato O Ward and Alex Palou.
