On May 13, Jean Smart s new comedy series Hacks premieres. The show follows a young comedian (Hannah Einbinder) who lands a job writing jokes for seasoned comic who works nightly in Las Vegas (Jean Smart). During the TCA winter press tour, Smart talked about Einbinder s character. Ava s point-of-view is that if the masses thinks something is funny, then it s not cool, Smart said. And if the masses like it, you know, if the people from Florida who eat at Panera like it, it s not funny.

HBO Max’s strategy of releasing its 2021 movies on its streaming platform and in theaters is paying off a lot in May of 2021.
The app has largely been dominating the streaming space since Warner Bros. bold decision to step up and release new content while theaters across the country were closed. As the world gets back to normal, the platform will be benefiting from some newer releases in May.
Not only will it premiere the Angelina Jolie thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead on May 14, but next month will see popular pandemic-era titles like Christopher Nolan’s Tenet come to the platform alongside the return of Wonder Woman: 1984, which dominated both the box office and the platform in December.

“Nomadland” took home a historic big win Sunday night at the Academy Awards when it received the Best Picture Oscar: it’s only the second film directed by a woman in Oscars history to achieve a Best Picture victory. Director Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” (for which Bigelow also became the first female Oscar winner for Best Director) was previously the only female-directed movie to do so. The prize for “Nomadland” at the Academy Awards on Sunday went to producer/director Chloé Zhao, producer/star Frances McDormand, and producers Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, and Dan Janvey. “Nomadland” marks Zhao’s third feature directorial effort following “Songs My Brother Taught Me” and “The Rider.” Zhao also won the Best Director prize earlier in the evening.
