Google s Accelerated Mobile Pages technology, known as AMP among web publishers, took a beating this week as an antitrust lawsuit filed by the Attorney General of Texas charged that the ad biz used AMP to hinder competition.
And on Friday, Terence Eden, a member of the AMP Advisory Committee, which was formed two years ago in response to criticism that the AMP project ignored publisher concerns, announced his resignation, citing the project s failure to make the web better.
AMP was created by Google in 2015, ostensibly as a way to make mobile web pages load faster but also as a defense against content formats like Apple News Format and Facebook Instant Articles. It requires web developers to code their web pages in a particular way using a subset of HTML and JavaScript to ensure the pages can be loaded efficiently.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Wednesday said he’s leading a multi-state antitrust lawsuit against Google, claiming the tech giant rigs digital ad markets in its favor.
“This internet Goliath used its power to manipulate the market, destroy competition and harm YOU, the consumer,” Paxton tweeted.
The lawsuit claims Google abuses its position as a market leader to manipulate ad auctions, driving up the price digital advertisers pay for ads.
Google Is Accused of Enlisting Facebook to Aid in Ad-Rigging
WASHINGTONâTen states sued Google Wednesday, accusing the search giant of running an illegal digital-advertising monopoly and enlisting rival Facebook Inc. in an alleged deal to rig ad auctions that was code-named after âStar Warsâ characters.
The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Texas, alleges that Facebook emerged in 2017 as a powerful new rival to Google, challenging the Alphabet Inc. unitâs established dominance in online advertising. Google responded by initiating an agreement in which Facebook would curtail its competitive moves, in return for guaranteed special treatment in Google-run ad auctions, the lawsuit claims.

Google found itself in the crosshairs of government regulators Tuesday as the U.S. Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit against the tech giant for unlawfully maintaining a monopoly in online search services and in search advertising. This is a monumental case for the Department of Justice and, more importantly, for the American consumer, U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr said in a statement.
He explained that over the last 16 months, his agency s Antitrust Division has collected convincing evidence that Google no longer competes only on merit but instead uses its monopoly power and billions in monopoly profits to lock up key pathways to search on mobile phones, browsers, and next generation devices, depriving rivals of distribution and scale.
