Dawn/File KARACHI/LAHORE: The export-oriented industry and trade on Saturday strongly rejected the government’s announcement of a five-day Eidul Fitr holiday from May 10 to 15, claiming that the break would cause a loss of over $300 million in exports. Talking to Dawn, trade and industry leaders said the long Eid holiday – which is likely to spill over to nine days starting from May 7 and ending on May 16 – will hurt economic activity. They urged the government to withdraw its decision by squeezing the festive break to three days only. They urged the government to announce revised holidays of Eidul Fitr from May 12 to 15.

Social security coverage urged February 4, 2021 KARACHI: Employers should provide full coverage of social security benefits to their employees to reap the fruit of improved enterprise productivity. This was stated by Zaki Ahmed Khan, vice president of EFP, while addressing awareness raising meetings with the employers on social security schemes in Sindh. These meetings were organised by Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP) in collaboration with ILO at the SITE Association of Trade and Industry and the Towel Manufacturers Association of Pakistan. Khan said that only 42 percent of the secured workers were covered under the social security scheme and it was the need of the hour that this coverage should be increased so that the scope of benefit provided to workers through employers’ contribution may be widened to the maximum number of eligible workers.

Industrialists, traders join forces to thwart gas suspension plan Business January 26, 2021 KARACHI: Industrialists and traders joined forces to voice concerns on Monday over the government’s decision to suspend gas supply to industries without making any alternative arrangement. Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Employers Federation of Pakistan, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), and other trade bodies from across the country held a joint press conference at the FPCCI House to condemn the government’s decision to suspend gas supply to general industry from February 1 and to export-oriented industry from March 1. “Closing gas supply to industries means closing of industry,” said Zubair Motiwala, chairman of Businessmen Group (BMG). “If government wants this it should be ready for unrest and anarchy.”

CSOs decry denial of access to residential areas, road blockades around National Stadium Karachi January 23, 2021 Civil society, human rights, and trade union leaders have condemned the traffic mismanagement in Karachi and cordoning off the residential areas around the National Stadium in the name of security for a Test match to be played next week at the stadium. In a joint statement issued here on Friday, Karamat Ali, executive director of the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research; Habibuddin Junaidi of the Peopleâs Labour Bureau; Nasir Mansoor, general secretary, National Trade Union Federation (NTUF); Farhat Perveen, executive director, NOW Communities; Liaquat Sahi from the Democratic Workers Union of the State Bank of Pakistan; Nazim F. Haji, former chief of Citizens-Police Liaison Committee; and Majyd Aziz, former president of the Employers Federation of Pakistan, demanded restricting security inside the stadium premises.
