Talking to Dawn, trade and industry leaders said the long Eid holiday – which is likely to spill over to nine days starting from May 7 and ending on May 16 – will hurt economic activity. They urged the government to withdraw its decision by squeezing the festive break to three days only. They urged the government to announce revised holidays of Eidul Fitr from May 12 to 15.

Social security coverage urged February 4, 2021 KARACHI: Employers should provide full coverage of social security benefits to their employees to reap the fruit of improved enterprise productivity. This was stated by Zaki Ahmed Khan, vice president of EFP, while addressing awareness raising meetings with the employers on social security schemes in Sindh. These meetings were organised by Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP) in collaboration with ILO at the SITE Association of Trade and Industry and the Towel Manufacturers Association of Pakistan. Khan said that only 42 percent of the secured workers were covered under the social security scheme and it was the need of the hour that this coverage should be increased so that the scope of benefit provided to workers through employers’ contribution may be widened to the maximum number of eligible workers.

Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Employers Federation of Pakistan, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), and other trade bodies from across the country held a joint press conference at the FPCCI House to condemn the government’s decision to suspend gas supply to general industry from February 1 and to export-oriented industry from March 1. “Closing gas supply to industries means closing of industry,” said Zubair Motiwala, chairman of Businessmen Group (BMG). “If government wants this it should be ready for unrest and anarchy.”
