Strong to severe storms possible later this week

Super soaker of a weekend on tap for the Big Bend FIRST ALERT: Storms, steady rain with slow front and last updated 2021-01-01 04:10:46-05 MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) — The umbrellas will come in handy this weekend. A slow moving cold front will bring steady showers and storms to the area this weekend. The morning will be the driest part of the day with a passing shower. By the afternoon, a line of showers and storms will begin moving into the western half of the Big Bend and South Georgia. Some of these storms will have the potential to produce gusty winds, heavy rain and even a brief tornado. This broken line of storms will inch it s way into the Leon County area by late afternoon and early evening.

(WTXL) — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Lanier and Lowndes Counties until 4:30 p.m. Expect heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and wind gusts up to 60 mph. National Weather Service reports seeing winds in excess of 60 mph on radar passing just south of Valdosta and moving into Lake Park. These storms will move out of Lowndes and Lanier Counties in about 30 minutes. A storm moving through Madison County is also severe and will be exiting the county by 4:30 pm. Storms over Apalachee Bay and Taylor County are strong with winds of 40-50 mph and continue to move east.

(WTXL) — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Perry, Mayo, and Steinhatchee until 5:45 p.m. The National Weather Service said the severe weather threat will exit the Big Bend area and I-75 corridor Thursday evening, followed by a strong cold front bringing freezing temperatures overnight into Christmas morning. NWS expects scattered convection and a strong cold front with a history of strong to severe storms that will continue to produce gusty winds, widespread rain and showers, and isolated rumbles of thunder through Christmas.
