Taliban blow up bridges, close off a road between Nangarhar and Kabul

(Last Updated On: August 5, 2021) Taliban fighters attacked a security checkpoint in Fatehabad area of Sorkh Rud district of Nangarhar province on Thursday morning and have blocked access for motorists along a road that leads to Kabul. Ataullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar, said the Taliban had blown up three bridges on a secondary road between Kabul and Jalalabad, and have closed it to motorists. Sayed Rahman, the police chief of Surkh Rud district, said the Afghan security forces were too much for the Taliban to handle and because of this the militants started blowing up bridges. Meanwhile, Nangarhar governor Ziaulhaq Amarkhail says that Afghan forces in the Gandmak area of Sherzad district of Nangarhar province repulsed a Taliban attack last night, killing 36 Taliban insurgents, including foreign nationals and their leaders, and wounding 52 others.

This comes after battles in the city of Herat entered their 9th day on Thursday. Herat Governor Abdul Sabur Qani said the Taliban launched group attacks in seven parts of PD2, PD3, PD10 and PD11 in Herat city overnight, but were beaten back by security forces, who were supported by public uprising forces. He added that three security personnel, including Wahid Ahmad Kohistani, the commander of Herat’s PD10 police district, were killed in the Taliban attacks.

Amid escalating tensions, Pakistan shelves plan to host Afg 03 Aug 2021, 14:55 GMT+10 Islamabad [Pakistan], August 3 (ANI): With tensions escalating between governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan over the latter s support to the Taliban, Islamabad has shelved its plan to host a peace conference involving Afghanistan s political leadership. The Pakistan government has quietly shelved its plan to host Afghan Peace Conference, Dawn reported citing a senior Pakistan official. The conference was originally planned to be held from July 17 to 19 to give a fresh impetus to the efforts for peace in Afghanistan. Twenty-one prominent Afghan leaders, including Abdullah Abdullah, Karim Khalili, Mohammad Younus Qanooni, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Salahuddin Rabbani, Ismail Khan, Ata Mohammad Noor, Sayed Hamed Gailani, Sayed Eshaq Gailani, Batur Dostum and Mirwais Yasini, had been invited to the conference in Islamabad. Several of them had confirmed their participation.
