Inmate dead following incident with Headingley corrections officers: First Nation chief

  WINNIPEG An inmate at the Headingley Correctional Centre who was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after an incident with corrections officers has died. Sagkeeng First Nation Chief Derrick Henderson said 45-year-old William Walter Ahmo, a member of the First Nation and an inmate at the Headingley Correctional Centre, died on Sunday following an incident at the jail that put him in hospital with life-threatening injuries. On February 7, RCMP said a 45-year-old inmate was reported to be unresponsive as a result of an incident with corrections officers. At the time, RCMP did not say how many officers were involved, or what the nature of the incident was.

The Manitoba RCMP says the 45-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries on February 7. Police were called to the correctional centre just before 7 p.m. for reports of an unresponsive male. He was transported to hospital, and on February 14 he succumbed to his injuries. Sagkeeng First Nation Chief Derrick Henderson confirms the man, William Walter Ahmo, was a member of the First Nation. RCMP Major Crime Services has taken carriage of the investigation and is being assisted by RCMP Forensic Identification Services and Headingley RCMP, and continues to investigate.
