A new report compiled by a coalition of tribal education leaders, experts and advocates is calling for a âdramatic changeâ in New Mexicoâs public education system to close an equity gap for Native American students.
The Tribal Education Alliance argues in the report, released last week, that the cumulative effect of New Mexicoâs education policies, from early childhood through college, produces disparate outcomes for students, which are threatening the future of both Native students and tribal communities.
The report, âPathways to Education Sovereignty: Taking a Stand for Native Children,â champions the landmark lawsuit Yazzie/Martinez v. State of New Mexico as a step toward correcting inequities. But, the report says, the issues cited in the suit must be addressed through legislation that transforms the education system.
A Cordova man couldnât have picked a worse time or place to run a stop sign, which resulted in him colliding with an Española Police officer.
Johnny Sandoval, 45, Cordova was arrested the night of Dec. 3 and initially charged with reckless driving under the influence of medication/drugs/alcohol.
Because the accident involved a police officer, the Rio Arriba County Sheriffâs Office handled the investigation.
Sheriffâs Office Cpl. Andres Sanchez worked as primary on the accident investigation with Deputies Jerry Albo and Joseph Cannon.
Sanchez states in his incident report that he arrived at the scene about 7:15 p.m. and spoke to Cannon.

That’s the message members of the House Transportation, Public Works and Capital Improvements Committee heard from a number of lawmakers, experts and members of the public during a Tuesday hearing on the issue. “We don’t need to talk about the need, we need to talk about the how how are we going to do this?” said Rep. Natalie Figueroa, D-Albuquerque.
