He said the toy drive was a perfect opportunity to engage with the community and make a difference for children who otherwise may not have gotten any presents this year. One thing about it is that a lot of people have lost their jobs or financial responsibilities or they don’t have money. Annual ‘Heroes & Helpers’ gift giveaway in Syracuse goes drive-thru, but that doesn’t stop the Christmas cheer Updated Dec 13, 2020; Facebook Share Syracuse, N.Y. The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office’s annual “Heroes & Helpers” gift giveaway looked a little different this year, but that didn’t stop the department from spreading a little Christmas cheer. In past years, sheriff’s deputies, along with other Central New York fire and police departments, partnered with children on a holiday shopping spree at Target. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, there was no in-person shopping spree. Instead, children gave deputies wish lists in advance, who shopped for the gifts over the last few weeks.
