Rising numbers of Ward County residents get vaccinated | News, Sports, Jobs

jschramm@minotdailynews.com Officially, 11.3% of Ward County residents have received at least a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. But First District Health Unit Executive Director Lisa Clute told the Ward County Commission Tuesday that the state numbers are under-reported. The 10,427 people who have been given at least first doses in Ward County don’t include vaccines given at Minot Air Force Base and by the Veterans Administration. Clute said the military has been vaccinating not just military members but others who have access to the base, which is a significant amount of vaccine going into the Minot community. Those numbers are considered protected information so are not being released.

Inside the Worst-Hit County in the Worst-Hit State in the Worst-Hit Country

Cartoon by Frank Cotham Clute started to try responding to each point. But ultimately she just said, “Our intent has never been to create fear. Our intent is to provide you the facts.” I wanted to learn about Minot because it was exceptional: it was in the worst-performing county in the worst-performing state in the worst-performing country in the world. But I also wanted to learn about it because it didn’t seem unusual at all: the city was divided over what to do about the pandemic, and even what to think about it. I wanted to understand what made it so difficult for people to come together and address a deadly crisis.

Phippins was selected by Minot’s mayor as 2020 Citizen of the Year for her volunteer work. A dedicated community volunteer and frontline COVID-19 workers shared the spotlight in Mayor Shaun Sipma’s announcement of Minot’s Citizen of the Year during his State of the City Address Tuesday. Vickie Phippins, who has donated her time and resources to a variety of good causes, didn’t hesitate in choosing The Lord’s Cupboard food pantry to receive the $1,000 grant that she is able to direct to a charity as Minot’s 2020 Citizen of the Year. Her granddaughter, Jasmine Wallin, will receive $100 for her video entry nominating Phippins. The prizes come from contest sponsors.

Vaccine production must rise to meet demand | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 23, 2021 North Dakota is one of the nation’s top states in immunizing its population against COVID-19, but figures indicate there’s a long way to go in meeting the need and demand for the vaccine. As of Jan. 19, only 3.5% of the U.S. population had been vaccinated. First District Health Unit listed Ward County at about 5.3%. Operation Warp Speed that brought vaccines to the market in record time now is being criticized for its slowness in getting vaccines to the states and into the arms of people. Locally, rapid-test sites for COVID-19 have helped free up public health workers who have been burdened by testing demands so they can focus on what they do best – vaccinate. However, an inability to get their hands on enough vaccine in a timely manner to keep on pace has been a limitation. Nationally, public health officials have stated week-to-week uncertainty over how much vaccine is coming has hindered vaccinators in organizing a planned approach to getting the job done.
