Lockdown extended for seven days, but partial easing of restrictions likely from Feb 1 22nd January 2021
Gibraltar’s lockdown was extended for another seven days on Friday, although the Gibraltar Government signalled it expected to start easing restrictions as from January 31.
Speaking at a press conference in No.6 Convent Place, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said Gibraltar had recorded 14 deaths in the space of five days, and that the number of people hospitalised with Covid-19 included young and old.
A death in the community yesterday was also likely to be related to Covid-19, although that had not yet been confirmed.
“This disease is undoubtedly taking a tragic toll in our Community,” he said.
The Gibraltar Government has confirmed the Covid-19 related deaths of two more local residents, bringing the death toll to 47.
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo lamented the deaths but added Elderly Residential Services had also seen some recoveries.

Frontline workers offered psychological support 19th January 2021
Frontline workers in Elderly Residential Services and the Care Agency have been offered psychological support to ensure their welfare as they work through these difficult times.
The Covid-19 pandemic has strained staff who have been at the frontlines protecting, treating and aiding some of the most vulnerable in the local community.
The virus has also seen some of the darkest days in recent Gibraltarian history, and the Gibraltar Government has acknowledged the need to support its workers.
“Now more than ever before, looking after one’s own mental wellbeing is paramount,” Care Agency CEO Carlos Banderas said.
Gibraltar recorded another 13 Covid-related deaths over a “devastating” weekend that drove the death toll to 43 since the start of the pandemic.

Harrowing reminder of Covid dangers as Govt reports five deaths in one day

The Gibraltar Government confirmed five Covid-19 related deaths on Wednesday, as the number of active cases climbed back over 1,000.
The deceased include a man in his 70s with no underlying conditions and four patients of Elderly Residential Services.
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said their deaths were a harrowing reminder of the devastating impact of the virus on everyone and urged the public to adhere to the restrictions in a bid to reduce the number of cases.
All five deaths have been recorded as deaths from Covid-19.
