Finally, the Perodua Ativa has been officially launched in Malaysia. Instead of the customary big event, Perodua unveiled the D55L SUV via a virtual launch this evening, finally confirming the Ativa name in the process. If you’re wondering, Ativa is Portuguese for active, which makes sense for an SUV.
Also announced were the official prices. The Ativa starts at
RM61,500 for the base X variant, going up to
RM66,100 for the mid H. The top AV is yours for
RM71,200, or
RM72,000 if you go for the full two-tone paint option (pearl white/red with black roof). These figures, which are on-the-road excluding insurance, are lower than the estimated price range of RM62,500 to RM73,400. Prices include sales tax exemption, which is in place until June 30.

Believe it or not, the Perodua Ativa D55L is priced cheaper here in Malaysia compared to its Japanese counterparts in their home market. Made official yesterday, Perodua’s new compact SUV has an estimated price range of between RM62,500 and RM73,400. In Japan, the Daihatsu Rocky goes for the equivalent of RM65k to RM82k, while the Toyota Raize is surprisingly slightly cheaper at RM64k to RM80k.
UPDATE:
This is definitely a unique situation, as it’s not something that we can say often, with Malaysian car prices and taxation being the way it is. Usually, we report the opposite: model X launched in country Y at (a ridiculously low) RMxxk. Unless of course, we are talking about car launches in Singapore and more recently, Thailand as well (though that has more to do with the weakening ringgit than anything else).

Perodua D55L render
It’s official. Perodua has announced that its much-anticipated ‘D55L’ SUV is now open for booking, at the same time releasing first details on the Daihatsu Rocky-based model. Known by its internal codename so far, the SUV’s real name is still under wraps (some are saying it’s Perodua Ativa), but we now know that the D55L will be available in three variants – X, H, AV – at prices estimated between
RM62,500 and RM73,400, on-the-road without insurance, with sales tax exemption.

Like a cue to let loose, Perodua’s sales personnel are out in full force to win those bookings for the D55L SUV, which the order books were opened for today. They are armed with this leaflet, which appears to be a genuine flyer.

If so, the car’s name is out, and the SUV we’ve known all this while by its D55L codename is the Perodua Ativa. What do you think of the name? Like it or not, this also means that the Kembara name will not be revived. “Activate Every Destination” is the tagline, although I can’t wrap my head around that one.
