Governor Cuomo signed the COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2020 yesterday, to protect New Yorkers from Eviction and Foreclosures that are COVID-related until May 1, 2021. The bill that Cuomo signed also prevents credit discrimination, negative credit reporting, and Tax Lien sales and foreclosures related to the pandemic.
The moratorium on evictions was first announced back in March to prevent tenants from being evicted at the peak of a public health emergency. The bill that was just signed continues to protect tenants and homeowners in a time of economic hardship. It also includes an extension to the Senior Citizens’ Homeowner Exemption and Disabled Homeowner Exemption into next year.

Governor Cuomo has signed the the COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act recently passed by the State Legislature. The act extends the moratorium on COVID-related residential evictions until May 1, 2021 while also providing foreclosure protections to homeowners and small landlords.
In his daily email to New York State Residents last evening he wrote Many New Yorkers have faced economic hardship as result of the COVID-19 pandemic through no fault of their own, and this legislation helps ensure that no one is forced out of their home during this incredibly difficult period. The more support we provide for tenants, mortgagors and seniors, the easier it will be for them to get back on their feet when the pandemic ends. I thank the Legislature for passing this important protection for New Yorkers all across the state who need a hand.
