Many Illinois schools are failing to teach the 3Rs successfully. Now we will burden teachers, at risk of their credentials, to train students to embrace what is a leftwing philosophy.

If you have ever read George Orwell’s book, “1984,” a lot of what I am about to say will strike a responsive chord with you. A rule, proposed by the Illinois State Board of Education, is called the Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards, or CRTL Standards. As you will see, it’s no exaggeration to say the standards would tell teachers what they must think, believe and teach, in broad political terms, and they would disqualify teachers who don’t conform.
These proposed standards would require that teacher prep programs teach and train teacher candidates on highly sensitive and politically-charged topics, including race, gender identity and the role of power, privilege and student activism. In short, Big Brother wants to dictate every aspect of thought processes exercised by every teacher in the system. An educational buzz-phrase some Republican lawmakers want to swat right now, once and for all, is “culturally responsive teaching.”
It’s a revision to Illinois State Board of Education teaching standards that is on the Feb. 16 agenda of the legislature’s Joint Commission on Administrative Rules.
During an online news conference Monday, House Republicans said the proposed rule is a step away from the three R’s and from supporting a profession which needs more good people.
“Now we are going to make teachers prove they are ‘woke’ or ‘progressive’ and take their licenses away if they don’t prescribe to a particular political philosophy,” said State Rep. Adam Neimerg (pictured) (R-Dieterich).
