Former President Jacob Zuma’s supporters demanding his release on Friday staged violent protests across KwaZulu-Natal, blocking roads and stoning motorists.
The pro-Zuma protests are expected to continue throughout the weekend.
Police Minister Bheki Cele said on Friday that police who have been brought to KZN for the Zuma arrest “operation” would stay in the province to deal with the protests. Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola says former president Jacob Zuma will be eligible for parole once a quarter of his prison sentence has been served.
Lamola briefed the media on Thursday to outline the Correctional Services processes to be followed for Zuma after the former president decided to hand himself over to the authorities on Wednesday night.
