ATLANTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Former President Jimmy Carter issues a statement on the death of former Vice President Walter “Fritz” Mondale.
Mondale was a former Democratic senator from Minnesota who served as vice president under Carter. His family reports he died at his Minneapolis home at the age of 93.
Former President Carter issued the following statement:
“Today I mourn the passing of my dear friend Walter Mondale, who I consider the best vice president in our country’s history. During our administration, Fritz used his political skill and personal integrity to transform the vice presidency into a dynamic, policy-driving force that had never been seen before and still exists today. He was an invaluable partner and an able servant of the people of Minnesota, the United States, and the world. Fritz Mondale provided us all with a model for public service and private behavior. Former President Jimmy Carter paid tribute to his former vice president, Walter Mondale, who died Monday, crediting his late “invaluable partner” with creating the vice presidency in its current form.
“Today I mourn the passing of my dear friend Walter Mondale, who I consider the best vice president in our country’s history,” Carter said in a statement Monday. “During our administration, Fritz used his political skill and personal integrity to transform the vice presidency into a dynamic, policy-driving force that had never been seen before and still exists today.”

Former President Jimmy Carter credited Walter F. Mondale, his onetime vice president who died on Monday at 93, with transforming the office from a secondary role to a governing partner with his political skill and personal integrity.
Mr. Carter led the tributes to Mr. Mondale, many of them coming from the political left.
Walter F. Mondale, the former Democratic senator and vice president whose unusually candid and forward-looking bid for the pinnacle of American politics was blocked by President Ronald Reagan’s landslide reelection victory in 1984, died April, 19, 2021 at his home in Minneapolis. He was 93.
