Mumbai: A day after his appointment as Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) president, Bhai Jagtap has begun singing âEkla Chalo Reâ for the ensuing elections to the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), by wanting his party to contest all 227 seats. ââAs captain, I am of the view that Congress should contest all 227 seats on its own in the forthcoming BMC elections,ââ he noted.
Jagtap, who is also a trade unionist, reminded that there was a time when Congress had 75 corporators in BMC. ââBut in the last 10 years, this number has come down to 30 to 35. I will fight with full strength to improve the party s tally in the civic body polls,ââ said Jagtap, after performing the customary puja at Khanderaya temple in Jejuri.

Party opts for Marathi face to prepare for BMC elections
Senior leader and MLC Ashok alias Bhai Jagtap will be the new president of the Mumbai unit of Congress, the party announced on Saturday. He will lead the city unit ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls, scheduled to be held in 2022. Mr. Jagtap replaces former MP Eknath Gaikwad.
Mr. Jagtap’s appointment comes after months of speculation over a number of names which were making the rounds within the party for the coveted post.
Congress picks Marathi face to head MRCC but does a balancing act
The new organisational model is also being seen as the party s attempt to rid factionalism within the party in the run-up to the 2022 Mumbai civic polls. It is also an attempt to get the caste and community balance right ahead of the civic polls. Updated: December 20, 2020 8:06:50 am

A faction-ridden Congress on Saturday decided not to project a single face ahead of the crucial 2022 civic polls to lead the party in Mumbai.
While naming sitting party legislator Ashok (Bhai) Jagtap, a Marathi face, as the president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) on Saturday, the All India Congress Committee appointed former Mumbai Youth Congress president and ex-legislator Charan Singh Sapra as the working president of the Mumbai unit.
