IDOT highway plan includes improvements for MacArthur Blvd , I-55

The work is scheduled for sometime between July 2022 and July 2027, according to IDOT. Pritzker said the six-year highway plan, which is updated annually, will be funded in part by the six-year Rebuild Illinois capital program. That $45 billion, six-year program was enacted through a package of bills passed by the General Assembly on a bipartisan basis in 2019 and signed into law by the Democratic governor.  The program funds more than roads and is paid for with a doubling of the state’s motor-fuel tax, a tax increase on cigarettes, expanded gambling that includes new casinos in Chicago and its suburbs, and the introduction of legalized sports betting.

On Deck - Thursday, February 11, 2021

WCBU s On Deck has everything you need to know to start your day for Thursday, February 11, 2021. Our top story is about how the large encampment of people experiencing homelessness, living under the Murray Baker Bridge made headlines last year. Now, Phoenix Community Development Services has secured permanent shelters for 12 of them. WCBU student reporter Jordan Mead has that story. You ll also hear how surging overall demand for the COVID-19 vaccine may mask hesitancy among certain populations, particularly among people of color. That s why Dr. Abeer AlMajali an infectious diseases physician at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria is conducting a survey in Peoria County to find and hopefully address the concerns that may make some think twice before rolling up their sleeve.

Murray Baker Bridge lights up Peoria sky

Attracting additional attention is the effect the lights appear to create, particularly on cloudy nights. Ever since the bridge reopened in late October following a seven-month renovation, a glow in the sky has been visible from sections of Peoria and East Peoria. The glow has a spotlight quality to it. If it s coming from the bridge, that doesn t appear to be an intended effect. The Illinois Department of Transportation hasn t received any inquiries about it, according to spokesman Paul Wappel. Gene Olson, the director of the Peoria international airport, suggested descending pilots on cloudy nights were focused on finding runway-approach lights, not necessarily on illumination from elsewhere.
