Capitol Police struggling to meet existing mission requirements, union head says

© Anna Moneymaker The head of the Capitol Police union on Saturday said that the police force was “struggling to meet existing mission requirements,” in asking Congress for heightened security after a second fatal attack at the Capitol. In a statement, chairman of the U.S. Capitol Police Labor Committee Gus Papathanasiou noted the U.S. Capitol Police Department is 223 officers short of meeting its authorized level of more than 2,000. We are struggling to meet existing mission requirements even with the officers working massive amounts of forced overtime, Papathanasiou said. In the next 3-5 years we have another 500 officers who will be eligible to retire. Many of these officers could put in their retirement papers tomorrow. I’ve had many younger officers confide in me that they’re actively looking at other agencies and departments right now.

George Tanios, operator of Sandwich U, arrested for role in U S Capitol riots

George Tanios poses for a 2017 photo. Andrew Spellman Sandwich U operator George Pierre Tanios was arrested Sunday due to his role in Jan. 6 s riots at the U.S. Capitol building. Tanios, 39, is expected to appear in federal court on Monday, according to the Washington Post. He is charged with assaulting U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick with bear spray. Sicknick died the following day. It is not yet known whether his exposure to the bear spray resulted in his death. In a video recorded at the Capitol, Julian Elie Khater, 32, of Pennsylvania, is alleged to have said to Tanios Give me that bear s -. Approximately nine minutes later, according to the Post, Khater discharged a canister into the face of Sicknick and other officers.

© Getty Images Washington, D.C., residents are protesting the Capitol fencing that has been up since the Jan. 6 riot with bubbles and picnics. “Bring your dogs, your kids, your bike, a picnic blanket with snacks, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, balls, or whatever else you want to show how you use the part of our city currently blocked off by barbed wire,” The Hill is Home and Eat DC, the organizers of the event, said in the protest’s announcement. The protest took place Saturday morning, nearly two months after the fencing was erected. ADVERTISEMENT The fencing was put up after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot as a precautionary measure and there has been no indication of when it will come down.
