New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has again announced plans to legalize the recreational use of marijuana by adults in the state.
The governor first proposed legalizing pot in his 2019 State of the State address. At the time, Suffolk and Nassau counties quickly drafted bills seeking to opt out of allowing recreational marijuana to be sold on Long Island, and Mr. Cuomo dropped the effort later that spring due to lack of support in the state legislature.
But with many neighboring states considering or already allowing the recreational use of marijuana, the state legislature trending more progressive after the 2020 elections, and New York facing a massive budget hole due to the pandemic, Mr. Cuomo said in his State of the State Address Jan. 6 that now is the time to change the law.

To start the new session and with new lawmakers sworn-in, the Suffolk County Legislature considered changes to the way it holds meetings to allow lawmakers to video conference into meetings. After more than 10 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a no-brainer for legislators, but the measure still presented its own hiccups.
The debate began as lawmakers returned from the last summer recess. Democratic Legis. Susan Berland was still on vacation in Key West, Florida and wanted to Skype in. The state Open Meetings Law allows public officials to attend and vote at meetings via video conference.
The problem felt by the Democratic presiding officer, legislative aides and the entire Republican conference was that the proper technology and rules were not yet in place.

A new law introduced by Legislator Jason Richberg waiving sewer connection fees for financially stressed public school districts with failing on-site sewage systems was approved by the Suffolk County Legislature at its general meeting on .
IR1867-2020 amends chapter 740 of the Suffolk County Code to waive sewer hookup fees for school districts that are under a state fiscal monitor. Under the amendment, the Martin Luther King Jr. and Lafrancis Hardiman elementary schools in Wyandanch, as well as the nearby administration building and bus depot, will be able to connect to the county’s Southwest Sewer District. Aging cesspools and septic systems at those locations have become an issue in recent years, with heavy rains and rapid snow melt overwhelming the septic systems and causing sewage backups through floor drains in bathrooms.
