The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), yesterday, threatened to ground universities in the country should the Federal Government fail to fulfil its demands, including a N40 billion payment. To show seriousness, the two unions have begun a three-day nationwide warning protest in response to government’s alleged failure to address any of the issues contained in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by both parties in recent years. At the University of Ibadan (UI), the JAC of both unions converged on the main gate of the institution, marching through the Administrative Block, which houses office of the vice chancellor.

Varsity Workers Begin Three-day Protests over IPPIS, Allowances

Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja, Adibe Emenyonu in Benin City, Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano, Hammed Shittu in Ilorin and Ibrahim Oyewale in Lokoja University workers under the auspices of Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Educational and Associated Institutions and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) yesterday protested nationwide to press the federal government to address their grievances. The workers said they were protesting against maltreatment and the injustice meted out on them by the federal government. Among the grievances listed by the unions are irregularities in the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), disbursement of the earned allowances and non-payment of arrears of minimum wage, non-payment of arrears of pension and gratuities.

They also accused the ministers of failing to address issues revolving around the controversial Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS. These were part of the demands of the non-academic staff, operating under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, as they embarked on a 3-day warning protest at campuses nationwide.

A statement by the General Secretary of NASU, Mr Peters Adeyemi and president of SSANU, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim on Friday, said, the JAC NASU/SSANU observed that the federal government failed to address any of the agreement it signed with the union on October 20, 2020. In an interview with The PUNCH, on Monday, SSANU, Ibrahim, maintained that the strike would commence today and ended on Thursday, adding that all their members across the country would participate.

BUK staff protest government s failure to honour MOU

TODAY January 12, 2021 Non–teaching staff of Bayero University, Kano, Tuesday organised a peaceful protest against the failure of the Federal Government to honurr a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) it entered with their Unions. Drawn from the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, Non–Academic Staff Union of Educational Institutions as well as members of Organised Labour, the workers converged at the Senate Building of the University, chanting various solidarity songs and delivering speeches. In his address, the Chairman of SSANU, Bayero University Chapter, Dr Haruna Aliyu, explained that the peaceful protest followed a directive by the National Joint Action Committee of the two unions to that effect. .
