The National Labour Commission (NLC) has obtained an interlocutory injunction against the industrial action embarked upon by the Senior Staff Association, Universities of Ghana (SSA-UOG).
Wednesday’s [February 3, 2021] court order directs all members of the association to call off their strike and return to work with immediate effect.
The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has been on a nationwide strike since January 2, 2021, to demand improved conditions and payment of outstanding Tier-2 contributions of its retired members.
It is also demanding an improved market premium and non-basic allowance as well as the migration of public universities onto the Controller and Accountant General payroll system.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UOG), its executive officers, members, agents, servants and employees to call off its industrial strike.
This was after the commission managed to secure an interlocutory injunction from the High Court.
In a press statement released in Accra yesterday, the commission instructed the striking workers to comply with the directive of the commission, which was issued on Wednesday, January 27, this year.
Under the directive, the commission urged the parties to go back to the negotiation table to negotiate on non-basic allowance and when the Tier Two pension arrears would be paid.
“The National Labour Commission has on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, secured an Interlocutory injunction from the High Court of Justice (LABOUR Court 1), calling on members of the Senior Staff Association, Universities of Ghana (SSA-UOG), their Executives, Officers, Members, Agents, Servants,
Employees or Other Persons to call off their industrial strike action”, the press release announced.
It further ordered the group to comply with the following directive:
To call off the strike action immediately.
That the parties should go back to the negotiation table to negotiate in good faith on the non- basic allowance and when the Tier 2 Pension arrears would be paid.

The leadership of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has stepped up its monitoring at departments and faculties to ensure its members comply with the ongoing strike.
This comes a day after the National Labour Commission (NLC) obtained an
injunction to stop the industrial action by the Association.
The KNUST Basic School which has its teachers as members of the Association remain shut following the strike.
Members of the Association at other departments and faculties were not at the post when leadership of the Association went round on Thursday morning.

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has served notice that its ongoing industrial action for improved service conditions will remain in force until further notice.
It has thus given the government a 48-hour ultimatum to among others pay what it says is “non-negotiable” outstanding Tier-2 which goes back to between 2010 and 2016.
“Notwithstanding the commitment of the National Executive Council to engage the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission on our conditions of service, it is our absolute resolve not to resume our official duties until the government has fully paid our outstanding Tier 2 contributions dating 2010 to 2016. This is non-negotiable.”
