Affordable hepatitis drug offers new hope to millions

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Malaysia has registered the world’s first affordable – and effective – new drug for hepatitis C, offering the hope of accessible treatment to millions of people around the world at risk from a disease that has few early symptoms, is hard to diagnose and is often seen as a “silent killer”. The drug, ravidasvir, was approved for use with an existing drug, sofosbuvir, in June, five years after the Malaysian government, partnered with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), a collaborative, non-profit drug research organisation to develop the drug. “We decided to work with middle-income countries to try to develop an effective treatment,” said Jean-Michel Piedagnel, director of DNDi Southeast Asia. “We started the clinical trial in Malaysia and Thailand saying we are also going to put on the market an affordable treatment.”

Malaysia s empty syringe incidents may fuel Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy, experts say

July 21, 2021 Malaysia ’s Health Minister Adham Baba on Tuesday said residents who received improperly administered Covid-19 vaccine shots would be called in for a fresh dose, as observers warned that reports of such impropriety would further fuel vaccine hesitancy. The minister’s brief comments to the Berita Harian newspaper follow intense discussions on social media over videos purportedly showing staff at vaccination centres administering jabs with empty syringes. On Monday (July 19), the country’s Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) said it took the reports seriously and would investigate. “If found guilty of such offences, the task force would not hesitate to terminate the services of those involved and take actions according to the provisions of the law,” it said in a statement.

Gas flares, oil spills worsen climate change in Niger Delta communities

The development is creating apprehension among communities, who are apparently worried about their survival in the region. x Some manifestations of the climate change crisis triggered by gas flaring and oil spills include, the disappearance of wildlife, fishes in rivers, creeks and fresh waters of the Delta, excessive heat, shrinking vegetation, especially of economic trees like palm trees, oranges, mangoes, pears, plantain and banana. A recent visit to Kwale, a community in Ndokwa West Council of Delta State, revealed that the area, which is surrounded by about 10 flaring racks operated by oil majors such as Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC), Pillar Oil Limited, Energia Oil Limited, Mid-Western Oil Limited, Sterling Global Limited’s Liquefied Natural Gas Plant, has become a furnace of sorts.
