Central bank speech  |  1.         Greek economic developments and prospects The COVID-19 pandemic has halted the recovery of the Greek economy that had begun in 2017. Real GDP contracted by 8.5% y-o-y in January-September 2020, mainly driven by the decline in exports of services and private consumption. The fiscal and labour market measures taken by the Greek government to support businesses and employment, as well as the unprecedented interventions of European institutions – which include fiscal, monetary, supervisory and structural policies – have reduced the negative impact of the pandemic on economic activity and mitigated its adverse effects on the labour market.

ESMA announces 10 Year Anniversary Conference 22 December 2020 Corporate Information The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU’s securities markets regulator, will turn 10 on 1 January 2021 and, as part of our anniversary celebrations, we will host an online conference on 23 March to reflect on the progress the Authority has made as a financial regulator and look to its future. ESMA starts its second decade as a mature market supervisory authority and a key component of the EU’s regulatory framework together with the other European Supervisory Authorities and the European Systemic Risk Board. Over the last 10 years, ESMA has pursued its objectives of protecting investors and ensuring orderly and stable markets by completing the single rulebook for EU financial markets, supervising EU-wide entities directly, conducting risk assessments and promoting supervisory convergence across EU member states.

Commission publishes guidance on key provisions of EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime

Today, the European Commission has published guidance on the implementation of specific provisions of Council Regulation (EU) 2020/1998 concerning serious human rights violations and abuses. The Guidance Note seeks to address the questions most likely to arise in the implementation of these new sanctions. It includes information about the scope of the financial restrictions therein and their application. It also explains in detail the responsibilities of those who must comply with the Regulation, covering notions such as ownership and control, and the functioning of derogations[1].
