American Axle & Manufacturing Inc., a supplier of driveline and metal forming technologies, and REE Automotive, a leader in e-Mobility, have agreed to jointly develop a new electric propulsion system for e-Mobility. REE is in the process of merging with 10X Capital Venture Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company, to become a publicly listed company.
Pursuant to the recently signed agreement, the parties intend to leverage AAM’s system integration capabilities and focus on NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) reduction to incorporate AAM’s lightweight and efficient next generation electric drive units, which feature fully integrated high-speed motors and inverter technology, into REE’s highly modular and disruptive REEcorner™ technology that enables a fully-flat EV chassis for multiple commercial vehicle applications. For Hino, the option to develop commercial vehicles with special layouts and capabilities could be critical to winning over customers in a commercial vehicle market that has become highly competitive for electric vehicles.
Nearly every automaker including General Motors, Ford and Volkswagen is targeting commercial vehicles for growing their EV platforms.
Hino and REE expect to develop their first prototypes by next year. It is unclear when commercial vehicles from the partnership may actually be on public streets in the future. REE is a visionary company, and I am confident that this business alliance will become a driving force for Hino as we take on the challenge of generating new value in commercial mobility, said Hino CEO Yoshio Shimo.
