The deputy U.S. marshal critically wounded in West Baltimore on Thursday was taken off a ventilator Thursday night and is breathing on his own, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Deputy U.S. Marshal David Lutz said Friday the marshal is recovering well and was conscious and coherent, but still has a long road to recovery.
The marshal was shot in the torso while helping Baltimore police serve an arrest warrant on a man wanted in connection with a shootout at a grocery store last Saturday. Marshals and police officers returned fire, striking and killing suspect Donte Green. The wounded marshal was taken to Shock Trauma with a wound to his torso and was rushed into surgery.
