Advancements in electric buses making green transit more accessible for rural areas

By Chloe Trofatter Fifteen years ago, Michigan’s first electric hybrid bus was unveiled in Traverse City. Early editions of those buses proved unreliable. But with the return of the wave of electrification in 2021, has anything changed? State transit authorities are cautiously optimistic, but trust in technology remains a barrier to the incorporation of electric buses into fleets, according to Jean Ruestman, the administrator of the Office of Passenger Transportation in the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). “There is risk in implementing new technology,” Ruestman said. “There is still fear regarding how batteries will operate in the cold weather and on rough roads found in our rural areas.”

MSU Resumes Walk-In COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic, Open To All Michigan Residents

Courtesy / CANVA Starting Tuesday, May 4, Michigan State University is resuming its walk-through COVID-19 vaccination clinic for students, faculty, and staff. No appointment is necessary and walk-ins will be taken from 9 a.m. to 3:30 pm. The clinic is at the north end of the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. Members of the community can schedule an appointment for the drive-through clinic at the Pavilion. It’s open to all Michigan residents. The Capital Area Transportation Authority is providing free transportation to and from appointments at the clinic and other vaccine locations throughout Ingham County. Ingham County has reported 21,851 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. As of Monday, Michigan s confirmed COVID-19 case total was 849,420.

Appointments are not needed for the May 4 clinic, which is located at the north side of the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, university officials said. However, appointments can be scheduled for the Ingham County vaccination drive-thru clinic, which is also at the Pavilion, said Vennie Gore, interim vice president for student affairs and services.

CATA announces unilateral changes as contract negations stall

The Capital Area Transportation Authority announced a series of unilateral changes Friday as contract negotiations with its employees union continue to stall.  The changes include the elimination of retiree health care for new employees, amended policies intended to curb overtime and 3% base pay raises for drivers and mechanics, CATA management announced in a news release.  CATA has been bargaining with the Local 1039 of the Amalgamated Transit Union over a new contract for more than 17 months.  Negotiations began in fall 2019 The last contract expired Nov. 30, 2019, but CATA has been using short-term bridge agreements since then that match the terms of the old contract. The latest bridge agreement expired Thursday.
