Jamestown School District to Seek Public Approval on Capital Improvement Project

Jamestown School District to Seek Public Approval on Capital Improvement Project JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown School District will be asking city residents to approve a multi-million capitol project during this year’s budget vote and school board election. School Superintendent Kevin Whitaker this week presented a preliminary look at the proposed Capital Improvement Project, which he describes as a work-in-progress, but one that will be finalized by March 30, when the school board is scheduled to vote on. If approved by the board, it would go to the public for a vote on May 18. The Capital Improvement Project tentatively focuses on Jamestown High School, Persell Middle School, Fletcher Elementary School, Ring Elementary School, and the Tech Academy. It would also make improvements to the district Bus Garage along with District-wide IT updates.

Los Altos council addresses dilapidated Halsey House

Los Altos council addresses dilapidated Halsey House Courtesy of Jeff LaBoskey Halsey House, a historical landmark in Redwood Grove, has fallen into disrepair and has been closed to the public since 2008. The Los Altos City Council accepted a $34,000 state grant during the Jan. 12 council meeting toward preserving Halsey House, a historical landmark in Redwood Grove that has fallen into disrepair. The money would be used to fund a historic resource study of the property, and the city also agreed to contribute $16,353 from its park-in-lieu fund as part of its matching contribution for the grant amount. However, the council declined to immediately appropriate an additional $25,000 from its park-in-lieu fund to pay an architectural consulting group for review of the site, opting instead to have its commissions review and formulate recommendations on the direction the city should take on preserving Halsey House.

2020 year in review: Response to pandemic, protests and more

Asheville has not seen a year like 2020 in a hundred years literally.  On March 11, the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Not since the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-1919 has the world including our corner of it experienced this kind of public health challenge. Working with Buncombe County health officials, City of Asheville employees rolled up their sleeves, crafted creative solutions and showed up to serve this community. The year was also marked by national and local social unrest following the death of George Floyd during an arrest in Minneapolis.  But that’s not all that happened. The City made strides in solar energy, social and environmental justice and completed a massive dam improvement project.
