VFW Post 3128 provides nearly $2,000 in scholarships

The DeKalb County VFW Post 3128 Veterans and its Auxiliary members are very proud to say that Nobody Does More For Veterans . However, some do not realize the effort and commitment we invest each year into America’s children within DeKalb County. Working alongside America’s youth and instilling a sense of patriotism has always been - and will always be - a VFW priority. We continually strive to produce scholars, dreamers and leaders who benefit the entire world. Although we all faced challenges this past year, we didn’t want to stop encouraging our local students with personal growth and fostering a greater understanding and appreciation for America, its history and values. The DeKalb County VFW was very excited and honored to provide the following scholarships to the students of Cornerstone Christian Academy.

Rainsville focuses on beautification

The Rainsville City Council is tackling beautification with plans to demolish unsafe buildings. Councilman Rickey Byrum said there are 40-50 such structures throughout the town and it will take some time to clear them. He said it is important to prevent rodents that spread disease from inhabiting old structures belonging to absentee owners and areas overgrown with tress and tall grass. Following the passage of Resolution 02-18-2021(D), certified inspectors will test the unsafe buildings for asbestos and other banned materials so they can be safely burned. “We’ve got to start somewhere,” Byrum said, proposing the resolution that passed unanimously.

Coming To A School Near You: Teacher Vaccines

Lexington schools/Facebook A Bloomington pharmacy has stepped in to help the McLean County Health Department get COVID-19 vaccines into teachers arms. Genoa Healthcare, which is located at Chestnut Family Health Center, has been scheduling vaccination clinics throughout the month of February.   Sam Wilkes Pharmacist Sam Wilkes runs the clinics. She said Genoa wanted to take the vaccines to schools that are outside Bloomington-Normal because the health department wasn t able to do that. “They didn’t have the staff to go to the rural schools and they would have to schedule each district individually and assign it out on their own as opposed to us doing it,” Wilkes said.
