Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has declared a major incident in the capital due to rising coronavirus cases threatening to overwhelm hospitals.
City Hall said growing infection rates are putting immense pressure on an already stretched NHS , with the number of people on mechanical ventilators up by 42% - from 640 to 908 - in the week up to 6 January.
There are 7,034 people currently in hospital with
COVID-19 in London - 35% higher compared to the first peak of the pandemic in spring.
Severe pressure has also spread to other emergency services.

London [UK], January 9 (ANI): London MayorSadiq Khan on Friday declared a major incident here due to an out of control surge of Covid-19 cases in hospitals in wake of the rapid spread of the virus, and said that it has left the National Health Service (NHS) on the verge of being overwhelmed.
According to a press release, Khan took the decision as the formal Chair of the London Resilience Forum following discussions with leaders from NHS London, local authorities, Public Health England and the emergency services in the capital.
