HOUSTON – Immigrants and advocates are urging Democrats and President Joe Biden to quickly act on legislation to protect young immigrants after a federal judge in Texas on Friday ruled illegal an Obama-era program that prevents the deportation of thousands of them brought into the U.S. as children.

A federal judge in Texas has ordered the administration of President Joe Biden to stop granting new applications to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Issued on Friday, July 16, the order stated that DACA was created in violation of the law and whose existence violates the law. But Texas Judge Andrew Hanen noted that current recipients would not immediately have their status pulled as a result of the order, CNBC News reported.
Former President Donald Trump had sought to end DACA during his term. However, his effort was blocked by the Supreme Court in 2020. In a 5-4 ruling, the high court noted that Trump s order to end the program gradually was unlawfully arbitrary and capricious.

One day after a federal district judge in Texas ruled against the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, President Biden said the Department of Justice intends to appeal the decision.
In a statement, Biden said the ruling was “deeply disappointing” and “relegates hundreds of thousands of young immigrants to an uncertain future.” He called on Congress to ensure a path to citizenship for them.
The ruling struck a blow to the Obama-era policy that has protected more than 800,000 young undocumented immigrants from deportation since 2012.
