Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record The toll of the coronavirus pandemic on local businesses can be seen in Chaves County gross receipts taxes reports from July 1 to Sept. 30, the first quarter of the 2021 fiscal year. The pandemic brought a slowdown to the economic boom the area and state were experiencing in 2019 before the coronavirus crisis hit in March, but first-quarter 2021 receipts were not that far below the average of quarterly activity in earlier years, according to information released Friday by economists with the New Mexico Economic Development Department. The report for Chaves County showed that matched taxable gross receipts (MTGR) totaling $320.43 million were down $21.36 million compared to the first quarter of the previous year, or fiscal year 2020. The MTGR total also was down $27.6 million, or 8%, compared to fourth-quarter of fiscal year 2020, or April to June 2020.

New Mexico’s Job Training Incentive Program Board allocated funding to eight businesses to support a total of 87 jobs in December. The following companies received funding, according to the New Mexico Economic Development Department: Beck & Bulow Buffalo, which received $41,000 to support six trainees in Santa Fe. Boeing Co., which received $1.113 million to support 34 trainees in Albuquerque. Indica Labs, which received $63,431 to support two trainees and five interns in Albuquerque. KiloNewton, which received $95,666 to support four trainees and an intern in Albuquerque. National Water Services, which received $35,640 to support four trainees in Santa Fe. Systems Integration, which received $11,700 to support a single Albuquerque trainee.

Label maker Cymmetrik recently signed a lease in the Santa Teresa Border Zone and will begin operations in 2021, company officials said in a release. The Santa Teresa plant, which will initially create 20 jobs, will be the company’s first in North America.

Laboratory Director Thom Mason opened with an update on the Lab’s response to COVID-19. “We had to be very adaptable in our response to COVID-19,” Mason said. “The Lab is considered an essential service. Seventy percent of our staff is working remotely.” Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes The Lab is testing personnel working onsite and other employees with concerns they might be infected, Mason said. Although the Lab is on the same trajectory as the surrounding area, in which cases increased over the past month, Mason said that recently, the Lab has seen “a tapering of growth.”
